*Disclaimer about the Chapman Brothers
The brothers’ art thrives on shock value and controversial applications of taboo imagery. Their investigations of societal issues are presented alongside sexual obscenity and graphic violence. The Chapman Brother’s pieces both enhance and deplete the original subject matter by reproducing famous scenes within modern-day context, forcing the viewer to take a double look at the subject matter which is unsettling and shocking yet meaningful. The brothers said that in committing artistic vandalism, they could "erase history” and in defacing it “could subordinate the metaphysical value of its evil." I was assigned this artist for a cultural design and branding project in Elisava’s Typography and Graphic design class–I absolutely do not condone any flippant use of Nazi or KKK imagery.
